What is an IMEI code?

An IMEI code is the unique code assigned to any mobile device that connects to a cell phone network. The acronym “IMEI” is short for International Mobile Equipment Identity. “International Mobile Station Equipment identification” is a unique code, which should be assigned to each individual Mobile Station Equipment in PLMN (Public land mobile network) and implemented unconditionally by the terminal manufacturer. You can think of it as your cell phone’s fingerprint.

It’s not just cell phones that have IMEI codes. Anything that needs to connect to a cellular network must have an IMEI code. This includes 4G LTE android tablet, iPads, smartwatches, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. An IMEI code isn’t needed for a device that only connects to Wi-Fi networks, IMEI can be implemented regardless of whether users use these devices. so most laptops and non-cellular tablets/iPads don’t have one.

The main goal of IMEI is to be able to take measures to prevent the use of stolen equipment or equipment that cannot or is no longer allowed to be used in PLMN due to technical reasons.

IMEI is incorporated into the UE module contained in the terminal. IMEI shall be unique and shall not be changed after the final production process of the terminal. It should be able to resist tampering (I .e. manipulation and change) in any way (such as physical, electrical and software).

The manufacturer that implements the IMEI module in the terminal is responsible for ensuring that each IMEI within the distribution range is unique to the terminal where it is located, and is responsible for saving detailed records of the terminals produced and delivered.

The composition of IMEI shall ensure that each individual Mobile Station device can be identified separately.

IMEI contains a lot of information, through which PLMN can immediately decide whether to accept the call sent through the device after requesting the information.

IMEI consists of the following elements (each element can only consist of decimal digits):

  • Type assignment Code (TAC: Type Allocation Code). The length is 8 bits (have you found that the BOSS side uses this TAC data to identify the terminal type);
  • The Serial code (SNR: Serial code) uniquely identifies each device in the TAC. It must be 6 characters in length;
  • Check bit (CD: Check Digit)/backup bit (SD: Spare Digit): If this is a Check bit, please refer to the following paragraphs; If this is a backup bit, when the terminal is transmitting, set it to zero.

IMEI(14 bits) is supplemented by the calibration bit (CD). When IMEI is checked, the verification code is not part of the transmitted code. The checkpoint is used to avoid manual transmission errors, such as when the customer registers a stolen terminal at the customer service desk of the operator.

What is an IMEI used for?

The most common use for your device’s IMEI code is to confirm or restrict access on a cellular network. If your phone is found on the international blocklist as lost or stolen, you won’t be able to connect it to any mobile network.

From the user’s point of view: IMEI used to ensure that mobile devices are not replaced. This code is available on the package of the equipment, which can be checked by comparison.

From the perspective of commercial developers, users can be calculated by obtaining IMEI to optimize the user experience of the APP.

From the perspective of commercial advertisers: IMEI can be used to identify different types of users and push related advertisements. Of course, the industry has gradually tightened its policies in this regard.

Can an IMEI code tell me if a phone is stolen or lost?

Yes! This is one of the most valuable uses for IMEI codes.

Anyone who is buying a used iPhone, smartphone, or cellular device should check that its unique IMEI code has not been reported as lost or stolen. The seller probably will not give out that information over the internet (for good reason). Instead, you may ask to check the IMEI code upon meeting for the transaction. If the IMEI code shows as blocked or stolen, you should walk away from the deal.
